Building A Web Site
Lesson 1

What Makes A Good Web Site

  • There are many parts of a web site that need to be considered
    • Overall Look and Design
    • Navigation
    • Graphics
    • Links
    • Content
    • How long the site takes to load
  • The best place to start is to look at many sites; as you look at these sites keeping track of (consider the parts mentioned above):
    • how the sites are built
    • what you like and don't like about those sites
    • what the sites goals and purposes are
    • who the site is directed at
    • who maintaines the site

Web Site Planning

  • What is the purpose of the page
  • What is the goal of the site
  • Who will be responsible to maintain it
    • A single indvidual (youth / adult)
    • A team composed of adults and youth
  • What will the site be providing its vistiors
    • Calendar for group members
    • Central point of communcation
    • Current Group News
    • Photos and information of recent activities
    • Method of recuriting new members
    • Resources as they relate to the sites purpose

  • Break the content into main topics. If a topic seems large break it into sub-topics (outline)
  • Develop a uniform way to organize and navigate the site
    • The way visitors will get from page to page such as links and menus
  • Storyboard
    • Sketch out each of the main pages, which should include:
      • general layout
      • navigation method
  • Create a Prototype
    • A test run of the site and integrity test
  • Create Web Site
    • Develop a final version of the site
    • Remember no site is ever done, a web page is always changing - It is Dynamic

Put It Into Action

  1. Pick several topics and search the web for them. Get comfortable moving around the Internet as it will be your home through out this course. Look at the various sites and see how they are designed and layout. Borrow ideas, but beware of copyrights.

  2. Pick a topic you would like to create a web site around and create an outline taking into consideration the above ideas.
