Cub Scout Field Day

A Scout Field Day is a series of contests that are aimed at developing and testing physical skills, specifically track and field events. Each team is usually made up of one Den's or Patrol's Scouts, the team then compete in a series of physical tasks and challenges.

There are a variety of awards and ribbons that may be awarded to the Scouts. Depending on the unit and the Scouts it may be a good idea to have awards for every Scout. As far as the indvidual tasks are concerened they should be judged using the normal First, Second and Third. Remember to make a big scene over everyone who pastipated to help reduce the chance of hurt feelings.

If the Field Days is going to last the whole day it may be wise to plan some kind of meal. The easiest way of doing this is a simple Pot Luck Dinner format where everyone brings something.

Opening Ceremony  
Athletic Events: Begin immediately after Opening.
Awards Ceremony Following completion of events.

 

Sample Rules:

  1. Have Fun!!!!
  2. Teams may be made up of 4-8 Scouts. Total scores for the team will be divided by the number of team members. This will make scoring fair for all teams.
  3. One jump, throw, etc. per Scout. No warm-ups or re-tries.

Sample Events

Tar Pit Leap:
A den’s total score will be the total of feet and inches jumped by team members divided by number of team members. The distance will be measured from the scratch line to the nearest point the jumper lands.

Hot Lava Flow:
The team will line up single file. There will be a cone 12.5 yards to the right, and another 12.5 yards to the left. The first team member will hop to the cone on the right on his right leg, then go around that cone and run to the other cone, then go around that cone and hop on the left leg back to the start point and tag the next team member who will repeat the procedure. The time will be taken after all team members have completed the course. The score will be the total time in seconds divided by the number of team members.

Boulder Toss:
The boulder will be a softball resembling a rock. It must be thrown shot put style, (throw starting with the shot touching the face/neck area then pushing the shot into the air twisting, spinning, and turning will be allowed. The team’s score will be the total of all the team’s throws divided by the number of team members.

Spear the Dinosaur:
A broom stick will be used as a spear (javelin). Each team member will throw the spear for accuracy at a dinosaur located on the field, with a possibility of 100 points if the dinosaur is hit. Scoring will be the distance spear is thrown. The team’s score will be the total feet and inches thrown divided by the number of team members.

Run For You Life!
The team will line up at the start line in single file. The first runner will run the obstacle course defeating each obstacle. When reaching the end, he will then return to the start line and tag the second runner. The race will continue until all runners have complete the course. The team’s score will be the number of seconds for the entire team to finish the course divided by the number of team members.
