How to make a Dream Catcher

Materials needed:
  • 5 inch ring (metal/wood or plastic)
  • 4 yards of suede/leather
  • 1/8 inch 3 yards artificial sinew (waxed nylon string)
  • scissors
  • glue
  • clothes pin

(OPTIONAL)
  • 1 small metal concho or Abalone shell
  • Pony beads (colored) (plastic or glass)
  • Feathers (colored or natural)

1. First cut a 8' (feet) of suede lacing. Glue one end of the lacing to the ring, and wrap the suede around the ring until you reach the beginning again (Be careful Do not the lacing). To hold in place put the clothes pin on top of the lace piece that is glued to until the glue dries. (as seen in figure 01)

2. To start your web for the DreamCatcher, tie one end of the sinew to the ring and make atleast (9) nine half hitch knots around your ring with atleast 1-1/2" spacing between each hitch, (figure 02). Make sure to Keep the sinew pulled snug between the Knots.

3. Start your next row of the web in the middle of the sinew that you have already weaved on Row (1) one. (figure 04) Continue to weave the same way until you are left with a small hole in the center of your web. Then tie a double knot in the sinew, to assure it wont come un-done add a tiny drop of glue to the knot and cut off the remaining Sinew when the glue is dry. (figures 05/06)

4. To create a hanging loop for your DreamCatcher, use a piece of 12" left over lacing/ leather and fold it in half and tie a knot in the open end. (at the top of the loop) Take your lacing and slip the loop end through the ring and then around the ring and over the knot, (or simply put tie a Larks head knot) and pull the lacing tight.

(OPTIONAL)
5. To decorate your Catcher you can add beads/ concho's and feathers. To add these items, Cut (3) three 8" pieces of suede and tie two of the 8" pieces of suede lacing about 1/3 of the way up each side of the DreamCatcher ring using a double knot, and then add (3) three colored Pony Beads onto each piece of lacing and secure it with a knot.

6. Utilizing the last piece of lacing (8") long, attach your small Concho or Abalone shell to the top middle of your Catcher ring and place (3) three colored pony beads onto each piece of lacing. Finally push two small feather up inside the beads on each piece of lacing except the piece of lacing hanging from the Concho or shell. Make sure you apply a small drop of glue where the feather and beads meet to assure they won't fall off.

NOTE FROM QUILL (The Author)
Now you are finished, This is just one way to make a DreamCatcher, I enjoy making many different types of Catchers because no two Catchers look exactly the same no matter how many you create. Most important thing about making DreamCatchers is being creative and having fun, and see how many different Dream Catchers you can make...
